Hugo combines crime, poverty, law, grace, and revolution to ask whether society can redeem people or whether it keeps reproducing misery through cruelty and inequality.

What stuck

• A society can produce misery structurally while still speaking the language of order and virtue.
• Grace matters here because institutions alone do not fully redeem people.
